Rajasthan State Electricity Board was formed in july 1957 to shape and revolutionize the power sector in Rajasthan Government. With the development of Rajasthan State Electricity Board, state power projects started getting priority. RSEB was established in July 2000 to govern and maintain the scope and success of power distribution companies in rajasthan government.

Government of Rajasthan established Rajasthan Electricity Regulatory Commission (RERC) in January 2000. RSES became monopoly power utility and had following new entities based on functional specialization, namely:
RVUN Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited to operate and maintain the existing state owned power stations.
RVPN Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Prasaran Nigam Limited to undertake the function of transmission and bulk supply of electricity in Rajasthan.
The distribution function does not come under RSEB and was made into three different Power Distribution Companies, as follows:
Jaipur Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited, Ajmer Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited, and Jodhpur Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited.

Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd (RVUNL) is the electricity generation company of the Government of Rajasthan state.
Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd has been entrusted with the job of development of power projects under state sector, in the state along with operation and maintenance of state-owned power stations. The RVUN Nigam is playing lead role in giving high priority to the power generation and manifold and rapid development of the state.
